TOWNGAME is a small browser game. We try to collect as little about you as possible, we never sell your data, and there are no advertising or tracking cookies. This page explains, in plain language, exactly what the game keeps and how to get it deleted.
We do not collect your email address, real name, location, or any advertising identifiers. Playing as a guest stores nothing at all.
Like every website, our server sees your IP address when you connect. We use it for one thing only: to stop abuse, by limiting how fast anyone can hammer the server and how many connections one person can open at once. It is held briefly in the server's memory to do that, it is never written to disk, never written to a log file, and never attached to your account, and it is gone when the server restarts. We do not use it to track you, profile you, or work out where you live.
Your account record is kept on a dedicated server we rent from Hetzner, in Virginia, USA. All traffic between you and the game is encrypted in transit (HTTPS and WSS). Your password and recovery code are never stored in readable form: both are one-way salted hashes, so nobody, ourselves included, can read or recover them. We don't log your data to third parties.
The record itself is deliberately tiny, and that is the main protection we rely on: it holds your name, two hashes, the date you claimed the name, and, if you support the game, your membership licence key. There is no email address, no real name and no location in it, so there is very little to lose in the first place.
Your account record is kept for as long as the account exists. Delete it with the form below and it is erased from the live server immediately.
One honest caveat: the server is backed up once a day, so that a failed disk cannot wipe out everyone's account and the whole shared world in one go. Seven daily images are kept and each new one overwrites the oldest, so a deleted record can still sit inside them for up to about a week before it is gone for good. We never restore a backup in order to bring a deleted account back, and nobody goes reading through them. The old copies simply age out on their own.
Guest play stores nothing, so there is nothing to keep. The shared world map is aggregate and is not linked to any individual, so it stays as part of the world.
That is the complete list. Nobody else receives your data, and we never sell it.
TOWNGAME is not offered in the UK, the EU or the EEA. Visitors from those regions see a notice instead of the game.
The honest reason: TOWNGAME is made and run by one person. Serving those regions brings privacy obligations, including appointing formal representatives in each, that I am not currently set up to meet properly. I would rather not offer the game there than offer it and handle people's data to a standard I can't stand behind. This may change.
If you made an account before this changed, your data is still here and it is still yours. This page and the delete form below stay reachable from those regions specifically so you can read what we hold and erase it in full, at any time, without asking anyone. If you would rather write to a human, privacy@towngame.party reaches me.
Your name and password hash exist because they are the account you asked us to create: the game cannot give you a persistent character without them. Your IP address is handled briefly to keep the game up and stop abuse. We do not use any of it for advertising or profiling, and we never sell it.
Our server is in the United States, in Virginia. What is stored there is a chosen name and two one-way hashes, with no email address, no real name and no location.
You need to be 13 or older to play. Because the game has live voice chat with strangers, we ask for your birth year before you go in, whether you make an account or play as a guest.
We check that answer in your browser and then throw it away. All that is saved is a note on your own device that the question was answered, so you are not asked again. Your age never reaches our server and is never stored. Asking your age is not going to become a reason for us to start collecting it.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll remove it.
Press ESC in the game and you'll see everyone currently in town, each with a MUTE and a REPORT button. Muting is instant and affects only what you hear. Reporting sends it to a person, and mutes them for you at the same time.
A report records the name you are reporting, the name you are playing under, what you wrote, and the time. It does not record IP addresses or anything else. Reports are kept so that repeat behaviour is visible, and are deleted if the account they name is deleted. You do not need an account to report someone.
You can delete your account and everything tied to it at any time using the form below, your account record is the only personal data we keep, so deleting it is a complete erasure. You can also play entirely as a guest, which stores nothing.
Enter your name and password to permanently delete your account. This can't be undone.
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top. For anything significant we'll note it in the game.
